Sir George Prevost
Birth: May 19, 1767
Bergen County
New Jersey, USA
Death: Jan. 5, 1816
Greater London, England

British Army General. He was the eldest son of Augustine Prevost and educated in North America and England with the purpose of pursuing a military career. He was commissioned at the age of 11 as an Ensign in the 60th Regiment of Foot in which his father was a senior officer. He was rapidly advanced in rank and became a Major when he was only 23 years old, and a Brigadier General at 30. He served with distinction during the Napoleonic Wars. On July 4, 1811, he became the Commander of the British forces in North America. Throughout the war he was inclined to take a defensive strategy. In the beginning of the War of 1812, the Napoleonic War was still ongoing and the British forces were greatly outnumbered. In early 1813 he took command of an attack on the American naval base on Lake Ontario. A victory here would have been decisive in the overall war, but the attack was hastily planned and at the Battle of Sackett's Harbor he and the naval commander, Commodore James Lucas Yeo, were hesitant in their attacks and stiff resistance made them withdraw. After the defeat of Napoleon, reinforcements were made available and Prevost personally led an army to attack along Lake Champlain and the Hudson River. Once again he met defeat at the Battle of Plattsburg, NY after the British naval squadron on Lake Champlain was defeated. Commodore Yeo blamed the naval defeat on Prevost for ordering them into action prematurely. He was relieved from duty and returned to England. British authorities accepted his explanation of defeat until the naval dispatches and Yeo's complaints arrived. Prevost requested a court martial to clear his name, but died a week before it was convened. (bio by: Tom Todd)
