Birth: unknown
Death: Aug. 28, 2006

Donald Freeman Hartley passed away in the early morning on Monday, August 28, 2006, at The Neighborhoods of Quail Creek after a courageous but hard-fought battle with cancer. Don was born to Virgil B. and Mildred (Freeman) Hartley. He was a well-known and well-liked police officer with the Springfield Police Department beginning in June of 1957 and continuing his law enforcement career for 30 plus years. Don spent his entire life in Springfield attending Boyd Elementary, Pipken Junior High and graduating from Central High School. Don was an incredible athlete and his sense of humor was known to many. He had a colorful life, which included serving honorably in the U.S. Air Force in his early days (1950's) and playing competitive volleyball while working as a police officer. Don is survived by Danna (Neill) Hartley of Springfield; his two daughters, Jennifer Lynn (Hartley) Gonzales and her husband, Ken, of Albuquerque and Amy Leigh (Hartley) Howard and her husband, Danny, of Springfield; and four grandchildren, Alex, Tyler, Abigail, and Emma. Don also leaves behind his only sister and sibling, Nancy (Hartley) Rakestraw of Rogers, Ark., and his favorite three nieces, Jeanne (Rakestraw) Farley of Carthage, Mo., Donna (Rakestraw) Scoggins of Powell, Mo., and Barbara (Rakestraw) Hobbs of Rogers, Ark. Don will also be missed by his four-legged companion and loyal friend of several years, Killer, his Min Pin. Don was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and an infant grandson. There are many people to thank for Don's care during his last days. The staff at The Neighborhoods at Quail Creek was amazing, making Don's stay there a positive and enriching experience for the family. A special thanks goes to Jennifer, Darci, Donna, James, Missy and Alana at Quail Creek. Also, Don's long-time neighbors were such an inspiration to his family, particularly the Gott and Scott families. Thanks to those of you who made a difference to us and to him in his final months. May God keep you and continue to bless you. A memorial service to celebrate Don's life will be at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2006. Arrangements are under the care of Greenlawn Funeral Home North on National Avenue, Springfield.
