SCHMUTZ, JOSEPH, PVT, B, 102ND OH INF
Joseph Schmutz married Lydia Ann Martin OCT-18-1855 in Wayne County, Ohio. They lived in Sugar Creek township, Wayne County, Ohio until the mid 1860's. They moved west into Illinois for a short time and then into what would become Lincoln County, Kansas.
On May 30, 1869, their oldest child, Robert "Arthur" Schmutz, was shot with an arrow, by a raiding party of Tall Bulls' Dog Soldiers. Ten weeks later he died.
While Arthur was hospitalized at the Fort Harker Post Hospital, (now Kanopolis, Kansas) the family moved to the area of Fort Harker, where they remained until the late 1870's. In 1880 they were living in Ellsworth, Kansas. By 1890, they were in Kansas City, Kansas, and in 1900 they were in Denver.
Enlisted as a private in Co. B, 102nd OVI, on 6 August 1862 at the age of 30. Discharged at Bowling Green, KY, on 30 April 1863 with a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability.
