Joseph Schmutz married Lydia Ann Martin OCT-18-1855 in Wayne County, Ohio. They lived in Sugar Creek township, Wayne County, Ohio until the mid 1860's. They moved west into Illinois for a short time and then into what would become Lincoln County, Kansas.

Enlisted as a private in Co. B, 102nd OVI, on 6 August 1862 at the age of 30. Discharged at Bowling Green, KY, on 30 April 1863 with a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability.
