Dr. (Thomas) John Carr, 55, of Onalaska died Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, after a long, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Known as John to family, and as "TJ" to close friends and colleagues, he was born in Sparta on January 23, 1953 to Maurice T. and Cecelia M. (Curti) Carr. He attended Sparta Senior High School, graduating as salutatorian in 1971. An accomplished clarinet player, he enjoyed many musical activities during these years. Following 3 years of study at UW-EauClaire, he was accepted to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in autumn 1974. He graduated in 1978, and continued to enjoy many life-long friendships made at U of M.

Following Dental School, he spent a brief time in Tomah before opening his own private practice in Holmen, WI in November 1980. He continued in General Practice there until illness forced him to retire in August of 2007. His goal was to provide consistent, high quality care to his patients, and he kept current with the newest technology and procedures. He was particularly proud of their new office facilities which opened in December 2003. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Wisconsin Dental Association, LaCrosse District Dental Society, LaCrosse Implant Study Club, and Psi Omega Dental Fraternity.

He was united in marriage to the former Jodi Bottcher on April 19, 1996 at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Holmen. Their union was blessed with the arrival of the absolute joy of their lives, daughter Mackenzie Leigh on October 26, 1997. John always said the time spent with "his girls" were absolutely the best years of his life. They enjoyed traveling, dining, and just being together as a closely-knit family, and their time together was too short.

He is survived by his wife Jodi and daughter Mackenzie at home, his mother Cecelia Carr of Sparta, his in-laws Dan and Charlotte Bottcher of LaCrosse and a brother-in-law Scott and Shannon Bottcher and family of Holmen. He is further survived by one uncle, Pat Carr of Tomah, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Maurice in 2000.

Funeral services will be at 11a.m., Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Sparta, with Reverend Father Delbert Malin officiating. Burial will be beside his parents at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Sparta. I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!"

"Gone where?"

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear the load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!" There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: "Here she comes!"

And that is dying.
