FROM THE BOOK "CORYELL COUNTY, TEXAS FAMILIES", compiled by Coryell County Genealogical Society Gatesville, Texas. WRITTEN BY CHARLES KERBY MILES (GREAT-GRANDSON OF ALFRED AND KATIE KERBY):

Alfred and Katie (Catherine Carson) were from Cherokee County, North Carolina. They came to Coryell County, Texas about 1850 by wagon train along with his brother Alney and wife Polly Carson-Kerby. The wagon train was said to be going to the "California Gold Rush". Along with the Kerby's were the Arrowood's, Wilkey's, and Carson's.

After a long journey filled with the problems of travel on a wagon train, they arrived in what is now Coryell County. It mush have seemed a wonderful haven of lush green and fertile land to purchase and establish homes, because many of them spent the rest of their lives there.

Alfred helped survey the lines of Coryell County, taken from Bell County in 1854. They were charter members of The First Baptist Church of Gatesville, Texas which was organized in September 1856.

Catherine (Katie) Carson-Kerby was the daughter of Sam Carson, her mother's maiden name was Queen. Sam Carson and his wife had four other daughters that settled in Coryell County. Sarah was married to Wiley Wilkey, Polly was married to Alney Kerby, Lydia married Thaddeous Hoot, and Dicie Carson married Anderson D. Arrowood.

Alfred and Katie had six children: John Wiley, Sarah Jane, Thomas, Levey, and Mary Luvina. Mary Luvina married Thomas H. Padgett and John Wiley married Mary Couch.

Alfred Kerby was born 19 August 1829 in North Carolina. He died 6 April 1909 in Coryell County, and is buried in the City Cemetery in Gatesville, Texas.
