From the English ancestral records we find that the surname occurs frequently in the early part of the thirteenth century and appears to be of Saxon derivation. The name appears in the inscription engraved on the seal of an ancient town on the English coast, and reads as follows : "Sigillum Burgensium de Saffordia." It also appears among the lists of immigrants who came from England to the Colony of Virginia between 1613 and 1623.
