ATKINS, Edward Ray Born August 2, 1961, to Hugh Edward Atkins and Shirley Atkins (both deceased) in Picher, Oklahoma. He died unexpectedly August 10, 2010, in Palmdale, Calif. He lived most of his life in California, though Oklahoma held a special place in his heart. Eddie Ray leaves behind his loving wife of 20 years, Katie and their faithful dog Lady. He is also survived by his mother, Cathy Atkins, Mojave, Calif.; brother Sam (Lori) Maute, Mojave, Calif.; brother Tony (Gwen) Maute, Quapaw, Okla.; sister Tammy Jean (Jerry) Gailey, Quapaw, Okla.; sister Tammy Ann Stevens, Mojave, Calif.; sister Wendy (Sam) Tryon, Lone Tree, Iowa; mother-in-law Melba Van Pelt, Palmdale, Calif.; brother-in-law Todd (Roxanne) Van Pelt, Ojai, Calif.; sister-in-law Colene Hixson, Woodland, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Eddie Ray had a heart of gold. Family, friends and God were most important to him. He also enjoyed being a cement mixer driver for 25 years; sports, especially Mojave High School (his alma mater) and Oklahoma University (Sooner) football; fixing things; cars, especially the Phun Time Cruisers car club; motorcycles; playing pool; enjoying nature; traveling; listening to music; and watching movies, especially after he became disabled from a work injury. Bib overalls, Hawaiian shirts, and any type of hat were among his trademarks. He will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 21, 2010, at Chapel of the Valley Mortuary, burial to follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Park. Those who wish to make a donation in his name may consider donating to the Cancer Society, any organizations supporting the U.S. military and veterans, or to Mojave High School for a scholarship (attention George Pulos). You may e-mail your condolences to Chapel of the Valley Mortuary, Palmdale Directors.
