Edward Michael (Mike) Murray, 68, died peacefully Monday June 21, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Glen Dale West Virginia, Mike graduated in 1959 from Linsly Military Institute and West Liberty State College in 1964. Mike owned and operated Radio Stations throughout the East Coast. He was a pioneer of Progressive Rock Radio with WGOE Radio in Richmond VA, and WOWI Radio in Norfolk Va. He also was involved with the programming & success of K94 and ZAM11.
Mike moved to the Outer Banks in 1975 and worked at Hatteras Colony South in Sales. He was the Director of Public Relations at the NC Marine Resource Center, the Director and Head Broker of the Outer Banks Beach Club, and Broker in Charge at Sea Scape Resorts. Mike was Executive Director of Beach TV 1987-92. This half hour show covered the local scene on Outer Banks Cable and on the Home Team Sports Network (Now FOX Network). From 1992 to 2006 Mike served on the Planning Board of Kill Devil Hills. He later published a book, Radio Daze, a tie-dyed perspective of the Radio Business. He also produced a documentary called "Romancing The Storms". Mike was well loved and never met a stranger.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia (Trish) Murray of Kill Devil Hills, two sons Bart (Jana) of South Nags Head, Bryan (Joanie) of Wheeling West Virginia and three grandchildren, Marlon, Quade, and Chloe Murray. He is also survived by a brother Ian (Marsha), and a sister Colleen (Walt) Tomasulo and many loving sisters and brothers-in -law. Mike was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
A Mass celebrating the life of Mr. Murray will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, July 16, 2010 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, NC with the Rev. Dr. William F. Walsh, O.S.F.S. officiating. A time of reception and fellowship will follow, immediately following the service, in the Church Social Hall.
Twiford Funeral Homes' Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC is assisting the family with arrangements.
Cremated, Ashes scattered.
