On Monday, July 9, 1962, John, age 92, of 2331 Jane St., South Side, husband of the late Minnie Bitter; uncle of Mrs. Katherine Miller, Amelia and George J. Holveck. Friends received at the L. BEINHAUER & SON CO. MORTUARY, 2630 West Liberty Ave. Services on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Friends invited. Interment private, please omit flowers.

Re: Relatives. John had no close living relatives. Mrs. Miller and the Holvecks were very close friends with John for many years. They considered him their uncle. He sold the Miller's his home in 1948 after his wife entered a nursing home and continued to reside there with them until his death.

John was a member of the North Side Unitarian Church in Pittsburgh.

The following are excerpts from a publication of 'Glass Horizons, Honoring Men Prominent in the American Glass Industry', October 1958.

John Evans was born on the South Side, Pittsburgh, Pa., on June 24, 1870, the son of Martin S. and Margaret Bender Evans. The Evans family moved to St. Louis where he attended public school. Later they moved to Louisville, Ky. where John loves to spend his vacations up to the present. At the age of eighteen, Mr. Evans was indentured for a period of four years to learn "the art of blowing bottles.". His father and grandfather also were bottle blowers. He's a retired GBBA (Glass Bottle Blowers Assn.) member, 88 years old and living at 2331 Jane St., in Pittsburgh, Pa.

John was the closest of friends since childhood with Charles Vogel of Louisville, KY. John and his family lived in Louisville in the early 1880's. John & Charles both moved to and worked together in Massillon, OH for several years as glass blowers, before Charles and family moved back to Louisville, and John and Minnie back to Pittsburgh. He was known as "Uncle John" to two generations of the Vogel children.
He and Minnie never had children of their own. However, he had two sisters, Fannie and Mary Evans.
