Death: Apr. 23, 2009
Bronx County

Gospel Singer. Known as "the Godfather of Gospel", he gained fame for his fast-paced and high-powered praise songs which he usually performed with large choirs. In 1976, after serving as a music minister for several churches, he started The Timothy Wright Concert Choir and wrote several hit songs including, "Troubles Don't Last Always" and "You Must Come in at the Door". In 1994 and 1999 he had two recordings, "Come Thou Almighty King" and "Been There Done That" nominated for Grammy Awards. During his career he recorded 19 gospel albums and served as founder and pastor of the Grace Tabernacle Christian Center. On July 4, 2008, Wright was involved in a head-on collision with a drunk driver that claimed the lives of his wife and grandson. The 61 year-old pastor never recovered from his injuries. (bio by: Bigwoo)
