Last Rites For Maj. John Brown Held Tuesday

Funeral services for Major John B. Bown (sp) 39, were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Hemphill, with the Rev. Clarence Howell, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the City Cemetery with Starr Funeral Home in charge.
Military graveside services were conducted by representatives of the Barksdale Air Force Base.
Major Brown was killed Tuesday of last week when a KC-135 Strato-Jet tanker crashed and burned at Loring Air Foce (sp) Base, Maine. He was navigator on the plane. Only two of the seven occupants survived.
Major Brown had served in the Air Force the past 17 years, seeing action in World War II. Prior to going to Loing (sp) last January, he was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport for six years.
He was married to the former Earline Polke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl N. Polke of Hemphill.
The body was brought overland to Hemphill by train from Carbou, Maine, leaving there Friday of last week. Services were held at Loring Air Force Chapel there before departure. His wife and three year old son, John Earl, and some friends accompanied the body.
Other survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Brown of San Benito, Texas.
Pallbearers were officers from Barksdale, friends of Major Brown.
