Ephraim William Hill, my great- grandfather, was born in 1854. He was the first of the seven children born to John Hill & Sarah Hart Hill.
Ephraim, his sister, Sarah Ann and brother, Albert Edward were the only children of the seven to survive the diphtheria epidemic that swept through the family in the winter of 1869.
On 14 March 1883, Ephraim married Ella Lillian Calkins, of Leslie Township, Jackson County. Ella was the daughter of Cornelius & Alzina (Patrick) Calkins.
Ephraim, who came from a family of farmers, built a log house in Blackman Township, where he and Ella raised a family of five children:
Agnes E (Kessler - Wheeler) - 1884-1958
Gladys Edna (Raymond) - 1892-1961
Hazel May (Messner) - 1896-1955
William Vivian - 1898-1984
Alice Ella (Thrasher - Bills) - 1900-1970
Grandfather Ephraim died in 1932 at the age of 78.
