Colonel Martin Cronemiller – A short family biography based on the research of Mr. Phillip Kloster, Terry Thompson, Nan Crussell, Linda Lewis and other family researchers.

Martin Cronemiller was born on 11 Mar 1797 in Middletown, Pennsylvania. Martin is the second generation Cronemiller to be born in the United States. He would be the center stone in the Cronemiller Family's journey from colonial America to the Pacific Ocean in just 3 generations. Along the way the Cronemiller's would encamp with General George Washington on the banks of the Delaware Christmas Eve 1776, sail with Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie and ride with Ulysses S. Grant in 27 major engagements of the U.S. Civil War.

Johann Martin Cronemiller was the first Cronemiller to set foot in America. Johann arrived in Philadelphia from Germany aboard the ship President, 27 Sep 1752. Johann married Anna Elizabeth KÖnig on 20 Jun 1756. Their son John Martin Cronemiller was born on 29 Jan 1761.

John Martin Cronemiller joined the Continental Army in the fall of 1776. After an extended march from York County Pennsylvania through New Jersey they joined up with General George Washington's Army in retreat from the Battle of New York. They took up camp on the west side of the Delaware River from where they attacked the Hessian Army on "second Christmas eve", 1776. John Martin Cronemiller thereafter participated in the Battle of Princeton. John Martin married Barbara Meyer on 21 Sep 1784 and re-settled in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania. Their son, Martin Cronemiller the subject of this biography, was born 11 Mar 1797.

Martin Cronemiller was born in Middletown, Pennsylvania on 17 Mar 1797. Martin Cronemiller answered the call for volunteers during the War of 1812. After guarding the building of the American war ships, Martin volunteered for duty as a "Landsman", essentially a precursor Marine, aboard Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's fleet on the Tigress. Martin engaged in the Battle of Lake Erie, 10 Sep 1813. He was awarded a silver medal for gallantry in battle. It is written that the silver medal still resides somewhere within the Cronemiller family. Martin continued his contribution to the war effort by marching with General William Henry Harrison's army wherein they engaged in the Battle of the Thames, 5 Oct 1813. Biographies state Martin became good friends with General Harrison who would go on to become the 9th President of the United States. In the biography of Martin's son, Major Daniel Cronemiller, it refers to Major Dan's father as "Colonel" Martin Cronemiller. This is published in the book "Portrait and Biographical Record of Western Oregon", page 536.

He married Sarah Armstrong around 1819. They had 8 children; William (1820-?) , Susanna (1822-1829), Oliver Hazard Perry (1823-1865), James (1826-1876), Margaret (1827-1911), David (1829-1910), Major Daniel (1831-1905) and Sarah M. (1833-?). Sarah Armstrong, Martin's first wife died in March of 1833.

Martin Cronemiller's second wife was Mary Rebecca Conkle (1798-1848). With Mary they had 3 more children; Thomas (1834-1908), Mary A. (1837-1924) and John P. (1840-1862).
Martin died 8 May 1848 and was buried in the Hazzard Cemetery, Wayne County, Ohio along with his second wife Mary Rebecca Conkle whose grave stone is now unreadable.
