The Archbishop of Canterbury under King Henry II, he was a powerful and ambitious prelate who supported the authority of the Pope over the dictates of the King. As a result Henry had Becket assassinated on the site his memorial now stands on the December 29, 1170, a sword being driven through the top of his skull. He was canonized two years later. The `A' which his name is frequently listed with is a relatively recent invention and was not part of his original name.
