Wladyslaw "Walter" Joseph Krzewicki was born in Bilwinowo, Poland (Wikipedia lists Bilwinowo as " a village in the administrative district of Gmina Szypliszki, within Suwałki County, Podlaskie Voivodeship, in north-eastern Poland, close to the border with Lithuania.") The name Krzewicki means "one who lives by the bend in the road or river." His father was Jozef Krzewicki Sr., also born in Poland, and Jozef's second wife, whose name is unknown.
Dede is thought to have emigrated to Jersey City, NJ at the age of 12, then moved on to the Scranton, PA area before settling in the area of New London, Connecticut. It is unknown who he came to America with, only that he apparently did not get along with his stepmother.
Dede was an educated young man who spoke five languages (Polish and English for certain; the other three are not known for sure, but were likely Russian, German, and French.) His ability to speak English earned him a position as a supervisor on the docks in New London. He was married to Wladyslawa/Wiola (Viola) Tercylanka/Terrick/Tercyak around 1903. Family history tells that he actually send for one of Bachi's sisters, but Bachi came instead.
Dede and Bachi had 10 sons and daughters. When his daughters started to grow up, Dede decided to move the family to New Jersey to keep them away from all the "Navy guys." This move occurred sometime between 1916 and 1928. There are also indications he worked on the docks in Groton CT, Breakwater CT, and/or Jersey City NJ.
Dede passed away at the age of 60 from cancer of the stomach. His obituary, dated May 25, 1936, states that he died "in Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg, where he was a patient for surgical treatment." He was buried in Pequest Union Cemetery on May 27, 1936.
