Birth: Jan. 31, 1838
Death: Dec. 5, 1906

The Rev. Jefferson LaFayette BUXTON was the son of William BUXTON (born in South Carolina) & his second wife, Mary WIMBERLY.

In 1866, he married Marthann E. GRAHAM, "Mattie" (born 1849 to Rev. Abner Francis GRAHAM & Sarah Ann Elizabeth RACKLEY). He and Mattie were living in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, in 1900; after more than a year of sad illness, this faithful servant of God died in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia in 1906. Mattie was living in Burke County with three of their children in 1910 and 1920; she is likely buried here at Sardis Cemetery, beside her husband and infant children.

Rev. BUXTON's obituary appeared in the True Citizen Issue of Saturday, the 8th of December, 1906 - Death: Rev. J. L. Buxton, a well known former citizen and native of this county, died in the State Sanitarium, Milledgeville on Wednesday and was brought to his native place for burial in the 68th district. He was about the age of 70 years and was an inmate of the asylum for a year or more. For many years of his life he was a man of prominence in the county before his health broke down and his mind became affected. He adopted the ministry of the Baptist church and became a local preacher for a time in the district where he lived. He was quite an intelligent man and took interest in the politics of the county. We have not learned what was the immediate cause of his death but it is likely he died from a general breaking down of his organism.

Rev. and Mrs. BUXTON were the parents of eleven children, born 1866 through 1886, five of whom they buried as infants here at Sardis Cemetery:
William Eugene BUXTON,
John Needham BUXTON (buried in Macon, Georgia),
Thomas A. BUXTON,
Mary Frances BUXTON, "Fannie,"
Moody Bliss BUXTON,
Riannah BUXTON,
Dwight LaFayette BUXTON,
Ellie Edith BUXTON, and
Jefferson Lamar BUXTON
