Rev. Moses Nathaniel MCCALL Sr. was the son of Rev. Col. William MCCALL & Nancy Ann FLETCHER, and the husband first of Caroline Magdalene GRINER and then of Catherine Ann PORTER, the widow of William P. DOPSON.

Rev. McCall was born and died in Screven County. He was a soldier in the Indian War and was also a member of the Georgia legislature for a number of years. He preached in the Baptist church for sixty years and died at the age of ninety-seven. He had six sons in the Confederate army:

Phillip Griner MCCALL;
Rev. Capt. Moses Nathaniel MCCALL Jr. (Captain of the Screven troop of Fifth Georgia Calvary);
Lt. Thomas K. MCCALL I (1st Lieutenant Fifth Georgia Calvary, killed near Marietta while serving on Gen. Anderson's staff);
Dr. Charles Polhill MCCALL Sr.;
Dr. Daniel Tucker MCCALL (a leading physician of Rome, Ga.); and
Rev. William C. MCCALL (a Baptist minister and in charge of Orangeburg church, South Carolina).

Rev. Moses Nathaniel McCall CSA.
Born 28 Oct 1792 in Bulloch County. Moved with his parents to Screven Co. in 1793. Began his career as a classroom teacher. Fought in the War of 1812 and in the War with the Indians 1818. He volunteered, with five of his sons, for the Confederate Army at age 68, and served as a Chaplain all four years.

As a young man, he was elected first as a Magistrate and then as a Judge of the Inferior Court, and in 1825 he was elected Representative to the State Legislature, In 1846, he was appointed, along with John R. Kittles 3g and two others, to relocate the county seat from Jacksonborough to a more central location. He was converted and baptized in 1821 at age 29 at Little Ogeechee Baptist Church, and was ordained a Baptist minister on May 25, 1828, at age 35.

He was instrumental in founding Middle Ground Baptist, serving as its first minister, as well as Little Horse Creek, Wades, Black Creek, and Sylvania Baptist. Black Creek was founded with 15 other dissenters in 1842, when Middle Ground voted for the founding of the Middle Baptist Assoc. He and his congregation were reunited with Middle Ground in 1852, and Black Creek ceased to exist. Pastor William Moore resigned, and Moses returned to his old pulpit.

He was also a farmer and extensive landowner. Married (1) Apr. 4, 1820, Caroline Magdalene Griner, daughter of Philip Griner of Bulloch County. She died in 1835. Married (2) Apr. 1836, Catherine Ann Porter (Dopson) 3gK, daughter of Thomas Porter 4gK of Beaufort County, S.C. , and widow of William P. Dopson of Chatham County. Rev. McCall died at his plantation in Screven County, April 21, 1885, at 93 years of age. He continued to preach until 3 years before his death. He and Catherine are buried at Middle Ground Cemetery.
