The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced on April 17, 2009, that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, recoverd from a crash site between 2005 and 2008, have been identified as Staff Sergeant Jimmie Doyle. Sgt. Doyle's remains will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors.
Staff Sergeant Jimmie Doyle was one of eleven men on board a B-24J Liberator bomber that was shot down while on a bombing reconnaissance mission of enemy targets over the island Republic of Palau. Three of the crewmen parachuted from the aircraft and died as prisoners of war of the Japanese. The other eight crewmen, including nose gunner Sgt. Doyle, went down with the aircraft into the sea.
Sgt. Doyle's body was escorted home to Lamesa from the Central Identification Lab in Hawaii by his grandson, U.S. Marine Captain Casey Doyle, an Iraq War veteran.
Please visit and honor Sgt. Doyle's fellow crew member, Sgt. Robert J. Stinson.
