"James M. Hooten an old resident of Banner township died last week after a short illness from pneumonia. He was 53 years of age and leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss. The deceased was a union veteran having served under the late Capt. A. W. LeCrone in the 98th IL Vol. He was in the railroad wreck at Bridgeport, IL and with many others was quite seriously injured, having been wrenched in the back in a serious manner. Capt. Lum Kelly of this county was killed at this wreck." Effingham Democrat - 15 Dec 1893
