Seaman Second Class Fowler was one of 48 crew aboard USS Duncan (DD-485) killed in action
during the Battle of Cape Esperance when the destroyer engaged a superior Japanese force while providing screening for transport ships in the Guadalcanal campaign. Duncan took direct hits and the order to abandon the disabled ship was called when fires on board overwhelmed the crew. The ship sank six miles north of Savo Island, October 12, 1942. - Info provided by FAG member Tim Cook
