While pastor of St. Patrick's Church, Fr. Duffey started the food pantry there on Thanksgiving 1977, when he found people without food to eat. The pantry continues to feed over 300 people a month. Father was a very humble man, dedicated to the poor of society. He brought out the best in everyone he met. He was very kind and loved people. He was known as the Cardinal of the Cass Corridor to the residents in that area. He was very proud of his Irish heritage, and he was also a great dancer. Many Irish Americans and other marchers would gather at the church after the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Detroit. He was known to enjoy an occasional ‘shot and beer', along with a cigar and a trip to the casino. His family and friends say that he never got mad, accepted people for whom they were, and never saw bad in anyone. He was never judgmental and only wanted to be an instrument of peace. Other attributes by family and friends to describe Father Tom: Human, warm, caring, funny, stubborn, outgoing, story teller, man of prayer, sweet-toothed, heavy footed driver, loved his priesthood, man of peace, determined, consoling, visionary, reconciler, and family-oriented. Father is survived by brothers, Robert and Peter (Rita),
and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters and brothers, the late Joseph, Daniel "Jack", William, Anne O'Neil, and Margaret Hetu.
