Ellen's parents were Daniel McCarthy and Mary Horgan of townland Curraghcroneen. To summarize the lives of William and Ellen since our last issue of the Claddagh, Oct 2005, it was discovered by Nora McCarthy and her father, David Kissane, during their trip to Dublin from her home in Croughcroneen the following fact. William Flaherty actually lived in townland Knockaunacurraheen, just south of "Crough", until 1874. Since William and Ellen were married, 20 Feb 1813, that would have put him well into his 80s, at least. Therefore, the original speculation that: 1) Ellen had died following the birth of their last child, Mary, in 1832 because Mary Flaherty Stack had named her third child Johanna and her forth Ellen might very well have indicated that Mary had never known her birth mother but had been raised by one Johanna Murphy instead. That was the name passed down as being our Daniel's mother by several of the descendants. Or: 2) that she died during the horror of the Potato Famine of 1845, well into the 1850s, as most of the children had left for America during 1850-51.
