Birth: Feb. 8, 1932
Death: Apr. 7, 2005

Racing driver. Henry Clifford 'Cliff' Allison was born in Brough, Westmorland, NW England, son of a garage owner. He began motor racing in 1952 and after progressing through the lower formulae, raced with Team Lotus in 1958. During the Belgian GP, had the race lasted a further lap, he would have beaten the three drivers ahead of him. Tony Brooks (Vanwall) finished with an almost-seized gearbox, Mike Hawthorn (Ferrari) had his engine break on the way to the finishing line, and Stuart Lewis-Evans (Vanwall) had the steering arm break yards from the line. On Mike Hawthorn's recommendation, he tested for and was signed up by Ferrari for the 1959 season. In 1960 he came 2nd in the Argentinian GP but crashed heavily at the Monaco GP and took a year to recover from his injuries. He returned in 1961 with a UDT/Laystall Lotus 18 but crashed heavily again at Spa, breaking both legs, ending his career. He returned to his garage, even driving the fleet of buses for 'Grand Prix Coaches' at Brough, Cumbria (a movement of county boundaries).
