James McCarty was the oldest child of Darby and Hannah McCarty . According to their Bible, James was born on July 4, 1736.
The maiden name of his first wife is Fugate, Sunderland Letter, her first name is unknown, and there is no known source of her first name. The name Sarah comes from misreading the McCarty Bible records, Sarah is the name of James' son's wife, who was also named James.
James was in Lord Dunmore's War, he was stationed at the Glade Hollow Fort but didn't fight in the battle of Point Pleasant. Service record Page 242 and Page 257 Click on link above his name, then click on the document.
In 1948 when James' Bible was in better shape the information was copied and this is what was copied.
James and his wife have six children listed in it;
William born April 01, 1764
Isaac born March 02, 1766
H born October 29, 1767
H born October 05, 1769
James born July 03, 1773
John McCarty born September 27, 1775
According to Hawkins County, TN land records James has a daughter named Hannah born in 1769. The other child is Sarah who marries Thomas North. Her grandfather, Darby McCarty, gives his consent to the marriage.
James wife would be killed by Indians, Sunderland Letter, and his son John would be sent to live with his mother's people, the Fugates. While the Sunderland Letter doesn't mention what happens to James' other children Sarah is sent back to live with her grandparents Darby and Hannah McCarty.
There is an oral family tradition that after James became ill he went to live with his son William in Hawkins County, TN and James died there. But where he is buried is unknown for sure.
