"... Herman Beach Ball was born in Ontario county, state of New York, May 6th, 1818. Was brought to Indiana by his parents when quite young...

Brother Ball was thrice married; first to Miss Rachel Hatfield. Three children were born to them—two of whom died in infancy. The other, Mrs. Hannah Rupe, is still living near South Bend.

In 1842 he was married to Miss Hannah Nelson. To them were born five children—three of whom died in infancy. One, viz: John Daniel, was killed in a battle at Atlanta, Ga., August 6, 1864. His last words were “I die for my country.” The other son, Samuel Reiley, is a respected citizen, and member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Noblesville, Indiana.

In 1876 he was married to Rebecca L. Applegate, who, with their two little boys (Gracie having died at the age of seven years), survives him in the spirit of christian submission.
