Milwaukie resident Alene G. Miettunen died on Dec. 29, 2008, at age 86.
She was born Alene G. Ringo on the family's Century Farm in Clarkes to parents Clyde E. and Ruby E. (Gard) Ringo on March 14, 1922.
She graduated from Molalla Union High School in 1940 and was state ping-pong champion.
She earned a bachelor's degree in secretarial science from Oregon State University in 1944, and was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority.
She worked as a stenographer for the FBI in Portland for three years and as an executive secretary for Crown Zellerbach in West Linn for six years until the birth of her first child. Then she was a secretary for the Warren Oliver Company in Lake Oswego from 1963 until she retired, about 1989.
She also was a Bluebird leader for her daughter's class. She loved to cook and led a neighborhood 4-H cooking class.
She was a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, where she served in several capacities including flower coordinator and prayer chain volunteer. She wrote, edited and produced the church newsletter for more than 20 years, and was a member of the Share and Care Multiple Sclerosis suppost group, for which she wrote the newsletter and coordinated speakers.
She was also a member of the Clackamas County Camera Club for a time. Her hobbies included photography, gardening, reading, traveling, cake decorating, flower arranging, camping, bird identification and rock hounding.
She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1962 but stayed healthy and mobile under care of Dr. Roy Swank. She began using a wheelchair only after breaking a leg in July 1998.
She lived in a log cabin in Colton built by her husband from their marriage in 1946 to 1953. She lived in West Linn from 1953 to 2005, at Somerset Assisted Living in 2006 to 2007, and at Clackamas View Senior Living from Dec. 29, 2007, to Dec. 29, 2008.
She is survived by husband, Paul A. Miettunen; daughters, Marna Porath and Jan Loree Bryan; brother, Al Ringo; and two grandchildren.
Her sister, Adele (Ringo) Roberts and brother, Boyd Ringo, preceded her in death.
A memorial service was held on Jan. 4, 2009, at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 19200 Willamette Drive, West Linn.
