DEATH CLAIMS AGED CITIZEN

MR ELBRIDGE W. CLAYTON, 87, PASSED IN LEWISTON ON APRIL 13TH

Death claimed another of this county's oldest residents, so far as age is concerned, when Mr. Elbridge W. Clayton passed from this life on Thursday, April 13, in Lewistown where he had been for over a year.

The deceased was born January 25, 1857, in Benton, Franklin county, Illinois. He came to Iowa while a young boy and grew to manhood near Fontanelle and was married to Elizabeth Maxedon on Nov. 3, 1878. To this union were born three children - a baby girl who died in infancy, Wesley who passed on in 1942, and Mrs David O. Mason of this place. Surviving him are Mrs. Mason, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Geraldine Clayton, five grandchildren; Wesley Mason who is in England with our armed forces, Enid Mason who is stationed at Eglin Field, Florida, David Moxedon, Mrs. Betty Clayton Symons in Elgin, Illinois and Joan Clayton of Iowa City, Iowa.

Mr. Clayton came to Montana in 1916 and resided on the Clayton ranch east of town until a few years ago when he came to town to make his home. About four years ago a fall on the ice injured one of his hips to such an extent that he had been in invalid since. His health up to that time had been unusually good. His mind was bright and keen up to the last. He was a firm believer in the doctrines of the Primitive Baptist Church and was highly regarded by his many friends.

Funeral services were held at Hillcrest cemetery with the Rev. Howard A. Dettmers officiating, who read the 121st Psalm and offered prayer. Mrs. Estella Holland and Mrs. Fred Dehnert sand "My Father Knows" and "Sweet Bye and Bye." The funeral arrangements were under the direction of George Creel of Lewistown. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. A large number of old friends were in attendance. (The Denton Recorder, Thursday, April 20, 1944 - Copy on File)
