A Sad Death

To be cut down in the prime of life is sad at any time, but to meet death in the horrible way that George D. Barton, met his, is particularly sad.

George was helping unload a car of three inch pipe, when, through the criminal negligence of the foreman of the job, something gave way around the skids and the entire load of pipe came rushing down, catching the young man and pinning him completely under its frightful weight. It is estimated that at least four tons of the piping passed over or lodged on his body, and the only thing that saved his being crushed to instant death was the fact that the skids bore the greater part of the weight. As it was numerous bones were broken and he was cut, and bruised and bleeding all over his person.

The accident occurred at Oil City, near Eldorado, on Monday, March 25th, and he survived, suffering intense agony, until Thursday, April 11th, when he passed away. He regained consciousness as the last pipe was lifted from his body and was conscious until the last. He was rushed to a hospital where everything possible was done for him, but the poor, crushed and bruised body was too far gone for weak human assistance.

The remains were brought to Pretty Prairie for the last sad rites, and on Saturday afternoon the funeral services were held from the U.P. church, conducted by the Rev. Reynolds of Tulsa, Okla., and interment made in Lone Star Cemetery.

The TIMES conveys the heartfelt sympathy of a host of near friends to the bereaved relatives. Truly " In the midst of life are we in death."
