|Birth: ||Aug. 23, 1913, Poland|
|Death: ||Nov. 5, 1996|
This was our Pani Vala- she was my sister Helen's godmother and more like our grandmother than anything. She was a proud Polish woman and would always cook pierogi, kapusta, sausages and paczki before Lent. She got a job taking care of the newborn babies in St Luke's hospital in Racine--back then all you needed was love, compassion and know how to take care of the babies. We would pick her up (she never got a drivers license) and bring her to our house every Sunday for dinner....when we drove her home and walked into her house with her she would always say "Hi Domek" which means "Hi House!" in Polish. She suffered a stroke that put her in a nursing home in 1995. She was unable to speak and since she never learned to write either in Polish or English, we couldn't communicate--and it really was heartbreaking. She died in the nursing home - she gave up eating and was not taken care of properly after that.
She grew up in Poland and came here to the States when she was a young woman. She never married nor had children, but my sister Cathy, Helen and I kept her busy at times! She was loved by everyone. I miss her dearly...Rest in Peace Pani Vala..Bog Blogoslaw..
