Russell Clawes was born in Chicago in 1905. He was the husband of Mae Nelson Clawes (1902-1991). He was the son of German born Richard R O Clawes (1879-46), & Danish born Betty "Bessie" Danielson Clawes (1878-1926). Russell was the younger brother of Roy Clawes (1900-1959), and sister Anna Clawes (1898-1899), who died an infant. Both his parents immigrated to the US as children with the families. Richard in 1882 at about 2-3 years of age, and Bessie was a teenager in 1893. They both from that time always lived in Chicago. He and wife Mae were the parents of; Charlotte Clawes Ritz (1930-1985), and Leslie Clawes (1936-1969). In his younger days as I was told by my Uncle Richard Clawes; Russell was "The Practicle Joker of the Family", and would go to any length to tell it, or pull it. Once he and his dear close brother Roy Clawes went to the trouble to disasemble a farmers wagon and reasemble it in the farmers loft in the barn for a laugh! He also loved to eat. His parents owned a deli and he visited it often as it was on the first floor of ther home for many years. He used to be very, very, good at telling neiborhood stories with Roy also! Russell would do differnt dialect imatations that were very good and extremly funny. They lived in a German-Polish neiborhood so he perfected those dialects or accents. He worked as an accountant but didn't like it much and may have perfered sales because he could sell anything to anybody and was an excellent communicator! He had what I call "THE GIFT OF GAB". He said he once had "AN OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE" when hospitalized an on a strecher with heart problems. This story is one he did not make up as it was not heard of back then. He said he could look down on the whole thing in the hospital room from the ceiling and that he was floating out of body. At a later time he died at the young age of 56 from a heart attack in 1961. This record comes from Jessie, Ina, Betty, Bob and Richard Clawes and recorded by yours truly, since I was the one bugging them for answers on a man related to me that I wish I had the pleasure to meet. The more I heard about him the more I think we were simalar people, or birds of a feather. Hopefully I'll get to record more stories as they crop up on Russell and others in this wonderful family. Hopefully also a photo since I have none.
