John Lucian Hampton was born on May 24, 1907 in Waco, McLennan, Texas to Michael Wade Hampton and Alice Chapman.
He had two late brothers William Wayman and Wade Chapman Hampton.
He graduated from Baylor University in Waco, Texas with a degree in Journalism and worked for several wire services and newspapers.
In WWII he joined the USMC And was sent to the Pacific Theater to code and decode encrypted messages, and to work as a War Correspondent.
After the war he became a Public Information Officer for the USMC Reserve in Los Angeles. There he met USMC Major William L. Hendricks, who was a Public Relations Officer for Warner Brothers. It was his idea to put a toy collection barrel outside that company's movie theaters which turned into the USMCR TOYS FOR TOTS Program. Hampton was enlisted to coordinate collection efforts.
He retired a USMC Lieutenant Colonel.
He moved to the San Francisco Bay area where he married his wife, Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist, Nora Hampton.
John and Nora resided in Orinda, California, until Nora's death on November 24, 1994.
At the age of 103 years old, he passed away in the Deer Hill Care Home in Lafayette, California.
His son and only child Mikey Hampton died in 2005 leaving John no close relatives.
