Danny graduated from Cox High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia and then entered the U.S. Navy. He served on the submarine USS Salmon as a radio mechanic from April 1967 to May 1968. He achieved the rank of Petty Officer, First Class. He was making the Navy his career. He returned to Columbia to enter the University of Missouri as an officer candidate in the Naval Enlisted Scientific Program.
Petty Officer Strain was entitled to wear the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Medal and the Navy Good Conduct Medal.
Danny was only 21 years old when he was killed in an automobile accident at the intersection of Route K and Highway 740, near the stadium of MU in Columbia, Missouri. He was driving his pride and joy - a new Chevy II Nova powered by a racing engine built by Dick Harrell of Kansas City, Missouri. The cause of death was fracture of the cervical spine. (Mr. Harrel was killed just 3 years later in a car he built for himself.)
