Bernice was born in Chicago to Swedish immigrants, Emil and Malin Staff. She and her twin sister Dorothy were children numbers 7 and 8 for the family, and were the final children born.
Bernice lived her entire life in the south side of Chicago on Laflin Street and Hermitage Ave. She was a student at the Harper public school when she became ill with non-contagious Tubercular Meningitis in mid-November 1924. She died 9 days later at the Illinois Masonic Hospital at the age of 14 years and 14 days old.

"Bernice Carrie Staff Nov 29, 1924, 6641 S Hermitage Ave, beloved daughter of Malin and the late Emil Staff. Services at Chaple 63rd and Harvard, Tuesday Dec 2 at 1pm. Interment Oak Hill"
