Born and raised in Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Wisconsin, where he met his future wife, Mary Kennerly Herbert. They married in New York City, 1916. In the 1920s, they moved to Michigan, where he remained. He was involved in advertising. They had three children: Barbara Herbert Holmes, Mary Kennerly Herbert Holmes, and Kathryn Osgood Holmes.
