Shoghi Effendi Rabbani (1897-1957) was the great grandson of Bahá'u'lláh, Prophet-Founder of the Bahá'í Faith. When Shoghi Effendi's grandfather—‘Abdu'l-Bahá (1844-1921)— passed away, Shoghi Effendi was named Guardian of the Bahá'í Faith and sole authorized interpreter of the sacred scriptures of the Bahá'í Revelation.

Shoghi Effendi was born in ‘Akka, Syria (now Israel) on 1 March 1897. He earned a B.A. from the American University of Beriut and then attended Oxford University in England. During the period of his leadership of the Bahá'í Faith he developed the Administrative Order described by Bahá'u'lláh and ‘Abdu'l-Bahá in Their writings.

In the 36 years he was Head of the the Faith(1921-1957) it's membership soared from 35 countries in 1921 to 254 countries by 1957. His letters have been collected and published in some 20 books. His only book—"God Passes By"—a 100 year history of the Bahá'í Faith was published in 1944.

In 1937 Shoghi Effendi married Mary Maxwell of Canada and bestowed upon her a new name: ‘Amatu'l-Bahá Ruhiyyih Khanum.

Shoghi Effendi lived out his life on Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel, the administrative and spiritual headquarters of the world-wide Bahá'í Faith. He died while on a trip to London in 1957 and is buried in New Southgate Cemetery.
