Capt Richard J. "Rick" Cashin

Captain Richard Cashin, 52, was killed in an automobile accident on Route 1, in Saugus, while on duty at approximately 1:45 am. His patrol car left the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Captain Cashin was assigned as the shift commander of Troop A and had served with the agency for 28 years.

He was born in Lynn, August 31, 1956, son of the late Michael J. and Mildred T. (McGee) Cashin.

Educated in the Peabody school system, Mr. Cashin graduated from Peabody High School in the Class of 1974 and Northeastern University in 1982. Mr. Cashin attended the Metropolitan Police Department Academy, formerly in Medford.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and then in the reserves for eight years.

Mr. Cashin was employed as a captain for the Massachusetts State Police, currently stationed at Troop A Headquarters in Danvers. He became a sergeant in 1984, a lieutenant in 1989 while a member of the Metropolitan Police Department and obtained the rank of captain in 2002 while serving on the Massachusetts State Police.

He was a former president and treasurer for the Boxford Athletic Association and director of the town beach at Stiles Pond in Boxford. He was also a member of Sacred Hearts Parish in Bradford.

Mr. Cashin was a devoted husband and father who loved his family endlessly.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Caroline Marie (Colarusso) of Boxford; his daughters, Katie M. of North Andover and Julie A. of Boxford; his sons, Thomas M. and Matthew R., both of Boxford; a brother, Thomas M Cashin and his wife, Emily, of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Mariann Cashin of Haverhill; a sister-in-law, Kathy Cashin Durkee of Stoneham; and nieces and nephews, Michael, James, Rebecca and Michelle.

He was also the brother of the late Michael J. Cashin.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral Mass on Monday, February 2, at 11 a.m. in Sacred Hearts Church, So. Main Street, Bradford. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be Sunday, February 1, 2-7 p.m. at Sacred Hearts Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, Bradford and Haverhill
