Deputy Diaz was shot and killed while making a traffic stop near the intersection of County Road 6 and County Road 99W at approximately 9:30 pm. After a five-minute high speed pursuit, the suspect exited his vehicle and opened fire on Deputy Diaz, penetrating his vest, striking him in the shoulder.
Despite the wound, Deputy Diaz was able to call for assistance. He was flown to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, who fled on foot after abandoning his infant in his car, was apprehended a short time later.
Tony touched the lives of many county employees while serving as an information technology technician for his first five and half years with the county. He was well-known throughout the county for his positive attitude
and strong work ethic.
Mr. Diaz became interested in the field of law enforcement while serving as a technician to the Sheriff's Department. After putting himself through the Sheriff's academy he was provided an opportunity by Sheriff Prieto to work in the department. During his four year tenure as a deputy
he worked court security detail and field operations.
He is survived by his three daughters and due to soon be married.
