Officer William A. Dillon was shot and killed while investigating the murder of a Saint Louis Police Officer by the name of John F. McKenna. Officer McKenna was shot and killed on April 7Th, 1916 while investigating two men he believed that were stealing copper streetcar wire.

Earlier in the day Officer McKenna had observed a car that he believed to have been used in the thefts and stopped the two occupants. When he searched the men he located a revolver on one of them, at which time he escorted them to a nearby business. One of the men asked if he could get a drink of water and Officer McKenna allowed him to do so. As the man walked behind Officer McKenna he produced a small handgun hidden in his waist band, and shot him in the back of the head, killing him. This incident occurred at 9:50 AM. The two men fled the scene and went to their home.

Subsequently Officer William Dillon received a description of the car while checking in on a Police Call Box while he was on his rounds. Officer Dillon recognized a car belonging to the two brothers. He went to their home at 12:20 PM and spotted them in the garage. As he entered the garage at gunpoint he was attacked from behind with a hatchet. The two suspects beat him to death and then buried his body in a shallow grave.

Both men were eventually apprehended and sentenced to hang, however, their sentences were commuted to life in prison.

Officer Dillon's wake was held at the Arthur J. Donnelly Funeral Home at 2039 Washington Ave. and internment was at Calvary Cemetery on 04/12/1916.

Officer Dillon was the son of Maurice and Jane Dillon.

Officer Dillon's father was a fireman on the Saint Louis Fire Department.
