Constable James J. "John" Boyd was a firefighter in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan. He married Mrs. Mary Moore, a widow of Windsor, Ontario, Canada 4 June 1906. Mr. Boyd was survived by one daughter and three step-children. He was a member of Saint Gertrude Catholic Church and the Holy Name society.

Mr. Boyd died when he was thrown from the rear of a speeding fire truck. The crash occurred when the firemen were returning to the fire station to answer another call after responding to a false alarm. His name, as John Boyd, is inscribed on the Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial Monument, Stone 4, Row 29. The memorial is located at the intersection of County Center Drive East (north entrance) and North Telegraph Road, on Oakland County's complex at 1200 North Telegraph Road in Pontiac, Oakland County Michigan.
