This is my first pet, Alex. I got him from Santa on Christmas 1995. I was in 3rd grade and living with my grandparents at the time. I could NOT believe they got me a puppy! He was so special to me. I wrote stories and poems about him growing up. In fact, I have so much about Alex that he has his own scrapbook collection of everything I drew and wrote about him when I was younger.
We spoiled him to the max and he was not the friendliest dog to others, but he loved us. He was very protective of us and had to be locked up when visitors came over. His nickname was "Snoot Boy," thanks to Papaw. We still use that word around the house. Alex was overweight, but we didn't know that it was hurting him like it was. He was not a minature, so we knew he was going to be somewhat larger than others.
On Christmas Eve night, 2002, he hurt his back and could not move his back legs. We carried him around and tended to him every way we knew possible. Christmas morning he was not any better so we made him a pallet in front of the heater. He still got Santa, but it was obvious that he was not excited like he used to be. We were all devastated. My grandmother and I could not go to Grandmother Lowe's that Christmas because we were so upset. The vet that we used reguarly was nice enough to come see Alex on Christmas day. He tried everything he could, but his back legs were paralyzed. On December 27th, we put Alex to sleep. Papaw said that he pinched his back legs as hard as he could to see if he would respond in any way and he did not. I had stayed at a friend's house the night before, and when I got the news, I cried the whole way home. Actually, I cried the whole month and am crying writing this now! It is so hard to lose a pet. He was our baby.
We buried Alex out back under a tree with little friends on each corner of his grave. He has two angels and two frogs. We buried him with a picture of us and his toy that Santa brought him that year, KING KONG, and his favorite pig, Austin.
On the bright side: A month later we went and got two more little babies, Austin and A.J. We named them after Alex in some way. Austin was Alex's favorite toy pig and A.J. is short for Alex Junior because he is the same color as Alex.
No dog will ever take the place of Alex!
