Dr. Forrest Prettyman White, 74, of the 1000 block of Algonquin Road, died Sunday evening, March 26, 1995 in his home. He was a native of Norfolk, and was the son of the late Edith Prettyman and Luther Wesley White Jr. Dr. White was a graduate of Randolph-Macon College, the Medical College of Virginia, and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1945 to 1947. He practiced pediatrics in Norfolk from 1950 through 1993, and was founder and first president of Pediatric Associates, Inc. He served as chief of pediatrics of Norfolk General Hospital, and as president of the professional staff of the Children's Hospital. He was a professor of clinical pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he lectured regularly, and acted as a preceptor to individual students. He served as president of the Norfolk Committee for Public Schools, the citizens organization that was largely responsible for insuring that Norfolk's public schools were reopened after a five month closing during the 1958-59 school year. Dr. White was a contributing editor of Medical Economics, which published over 60 of his articles. Articles he had written were also published in Atlantic, This Week, Todays Health, South Atlantic Quarterly, Washington Post and many local newspapers. An avid tennis player, he and his wife enjoyed playing locally and also at national and international meetings of the American Medical Tennis Association and The World Medical Tennis Society. Other organizations to which he belonged included local, state and national professional societies, the Torch Club of Norfolk, Town-n-Gown, the Chrysler Museum, Portsmouth Museums and the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts. He served a term as president of Planned Parenthood of Norfolk, and later as a director of Planned Parenthood of Southeast Virginia. An amateur photographer, his images were accepted for several shows by The Tidewater Artist's Association and are on display in the Children's Hospital. He was an active member of Larchmont United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Edith Reynolds White; two daughters, Ann W. Pulley of Raleigh, N.C. and Dr. Elizabeth White of Falls Church, Va.; two sons, Dr. Forrest Reynolds White of Norfolk and Mark Wallace White of Williamsburg, Va.; a sister, Rebecca W. Graham of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Luther Wesley White III of Palmyra, Va.; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Larchmont United Methodist Church by Dr. Lewis H. Morgan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Larchmont United Methodist Church Foundation, 1106 Larchmont Crescent, Norfolk, Va. 23508, or to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
