William was the son of Stephen J. Brearley and Cornelia Conover. He married Caroline Schultz on 20 Jan. 1864 in Jamesburg, Middlesex Co., NJ. He served as a corporal in Company H, 21st Regiment, New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War.
