My Maternal Grandmother.
Born as "Lucy Murphy" to a young girl from Chelsea, MA named Annie Murphy, the baby was adopted & renamed "Geraldine" in 1919 by Frank & Mary (Burns) Hughes of Brockton, MA.
Geraldine grew up in Brockton & Norton & was helped raised by her beloved Grandmother, Catherine Burns, & various Aunts.
Geraldine was a child model & dancer from the age of 2, & was once even offered a Hollywood acting contract, but her mother refused to allow her to go to California without her supervision. She was a true stage mother...
Grandma spent a lot of time in the movie theaters in Brockton - The Brockton Theatre, The Colonial, The Modern, The Strand, The Rialto, etc. She claims she "lived" in them. She knew all the ushers, who would give her movie posters & lobby cards when the films were done showing.
Grandma attended public schools in Brockton, & met her future husband Ralph Clark at Brockton High School, which she graduated from in 1937.
Grandma worked at the TJ Holmspray company in Chartley, MA assembling perfume atomizers.
Geraldine & Ralph were married at St. Patrick's Church on Thanksgiving Day (her favorite holiday) November 28th, 1940 in Brockton, MA.
Together they had 4 children- Rosanne, Kathleen, Mary Ellen & Robert.
Grandmother of 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren & 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Grandma enjoyed reading, knitting & was a big fan of Perry Como & of course, the Boston Red Sox.
"I'll be loving you, Always
With a love that's true Always.
When the things you've planned
Need a helping hand,
I will understand Always.
Days may not be fair Always,
That's when I'll be there Always.
Not for just an hour,
Not for just a day,
Not for just a year,
