Medical Pioneer. A cytopathologist, he developed what became popularly know as the "Pap Smear" (officially called a Papanicolaou Test), a cervical screening test in women designed to detect precancerous and cancerous cells in a woman's cervix. It became a critical medical procedure in preventing cervical cancer, and reduced its rates greatly since his research in the 1950s.
