Robert Haislip served his country is many capacities. He was a veteran of several wars. He served in World War II and recounted stories of being stationed in Germany after the liberation. He attempted to serve during the Korean War, but was prevented from doing so because all of his brothers were already deployed in combat areas. He again served his country in the Vietnam War.

He served his community as a corrections officer with the Dickson County Sheriff's Office. He was soon promoted to Sergeant of Corrections of day shift.

He loved comradeship with his fellow officers and is remembered for the many times he joked with them. He loved to tell his friends about "the baby" (his grand-daughter) and describe everything that she did when he was with her. He usually came to work several hours early every morning, just to sit and talk with his co-workers and drink coffee with them while sitting in the kitchen.

He took ill suddenly and passed away from natural causes. He was survived by his wife, Juanita Christine Haislip (who subsequently passed away in 2003), by his daughter, Maria Young (Dennis), and by his grand-daughter, Jessica Choate.

His co-workers commissioned a commemorative plaque to be made in his honor. It hangs on the wall in the main corridor of the Sheriff's Office, along side other plaques which honor other deceased officers.
