He married Lotawanna Fellows 30 April 1884 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Her father owned the Hotel Fellows where he was general manager. The couple remained in Hot Springs until 1904. Mr. Hay was manager or affiliate of several hotels: the Hotel Hay by 1884,the Hotel Arlington by 1891 & by 1897, the Hotel Eastman.
In 1904, as the Louisiana Exposition (known as the World's Fair) opened in St. Louis the couple relocated there for Mr. Hay to become manager of the fine Jefferson Hotel. He was also the secretary-treasurer & general manager of the world-renown Planter's House hotel.
