Labor Leader. Born in Kilgarvan, County Kerry, Ireland, he founder of the Transport Workers Union, serving as its President from 1934 to 1966. He led the memorable transit workers strike in New York City, New York in 1966. When he was served with an injunction from a judge prohibiting a strike and threatened with jail time he was quoted as saying "The judge can drop dead in his black robes. I don't care if I rot in jail. I will not call off the strike." The 1966 transit strike lasted 10 days and crippled the city. He died three days after the strike’s end.
