Douglas Joseph Conaway, 44 of San Francisco, ended a long battle with cancer and HIV on August 24, 2005. The Ironton, Ohio native is survived by his mother Edith Bentley, of Elmore, Ala., and siblings Carl and Linda Conaway of Bastrop, Texas, Harriette Conaway of San Jose, Calif., Tim and Nancy Conaway of Appleton, Wis., Sharon and Alan Staton of Elmore; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Pearl Conaway; step-father James E. Bentley; and siblings Lloyd Conaway and Jane Conaway Haney. He also leaves behind a widespread group of friends who provided love and support during his final days.
A graduate of Ironton High School, Ironton, Ohio. Mr. Conaway attended Miami University, where he studied at the university's European Center in Luxemburg and received a B.A. in Foreign Affairs in 1983. He moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983, where he attended the Graduate School of Journalism and Boalt Hall School of career, he helped create programs and raise funds for numerous health and education groups in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, including the American College Health Association, the National Education Association, San Francisco Suicide Prevention, and the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. Since 1995 he was a development officer at the Exploratorium, a national science education center and museum in San Francisco.
No memorial services are planned. Mr. Conaway requested that any memorial be made to the Exploratorium Children's Outreach program in San Francisco (www.exploratorium.edu).
