Arnold Gregory was born to Arnold Joseph Lutz and Marie Rispel, the second of three children. His parents were emigrants from Switzerland and Estonia, respectfully, with additional family roots from Austria. Arnold's parents spoke primarily in their German native tongue in his childhood and his English became more fluent when he attended public school. He was the middle sibling of Olga Marie and Alex Warner.
Arnold was a 1927 graduate of John H. Reagan High School. After high school, he worked a short period as a painter and an assistant bookkeeper for the Houston Press. He began his long-term career at Krupp & Tuffly in 1929, a retail shoe store in downtown Houston, in the credit and accounting department. This is where he met his wife, Winifred, also an employee. They were married in 1938 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Houston. Arnold and Winnie had five children, Suzanne, Arnold Gregory Jr, Mary Elizabeth, Winifred, and Mary Kay.
Many of his hobbies included vegetable gardening, team bowling, coin collecting, crossword puzzles, and mining with his metal detector for coins and treasures. He was excellent in woodworking and painting, a talent taken after his father, Arnold Joseph. He constructed handmade desks and bookshelves for his family. After his retirement he stayed active daily with his hobbies and meeting his friends for coffee.
Arnold and Winnie were married for sixty-two years and passed away two months apart in 2001. He lived to be 92 years of age.
