Dr. Linton Reese Dunson, Jr., 72, died on April 20, 2013 in Greer, SC. He was the son of the late Linton Reese and Margaret Shankle Dunson. A native of Athens, GA, he attended The University of Georgia and graduated summa cum laude. At Georgia he was elected to Blue Key, Gridiron, Sphinx, Phi Beta Kappa and served as the president of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Phi Kappa Literary Society and the 1962 Senior Class. He attended graduate school at The University of Virginia where he received a Ph.D. in Government.
He joined the faculty of Wofford College in 1966 and was named Gosnell Professor of Government in 1970. From 1969-1994, he served as Chairman of the Government Department. While at Wofford he acted as the faculty advisor to the Kappa Alpha Order. He was also the president and historian for the Wofford chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. After forty-two years teaching, he retired from Wofford in 2008.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of forty-two years, Suzanne Carter Dunson. He is survived by two daughters; Katie Phipps and her husband David of Greenville; Julie Meredith and her husband Trey of Greenville; and three grandchildren; Wyatt Carter Phipps, Virginia Carter Meredith and Samuel Bradley Meredith.
Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, SC at 1:30pm on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, conducted by the Rev. Dr. William L. Arthur, with a receiving of friends in the church parlor immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wofford College, 429 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
